Several very beautiful, and rather diftinét varieties of this fine fpectes occur in Auftria: that which we have delineated is the only variety, however, we believe found in England, where it appears to be extremely uncommon. The fpecies we apprehend to be rare on the Continent, as well as in England, Fabricius referring exprefly to the cabinet of Mr. Scieffermyller, for the example he defcribes. Phalzna roboraria is nearly allied to the fpecies of geometra, deno- minated by Englith collectors the “ mottled beauty,” (Phalena repan- daria) from which it is distinguifhed by the fuperiority of its fize, and fome little variation in the form and difpofition of the fufcous lines on the wings: the diffimilarity is evident on an accurate comparifon, but is not fo obvious at the firft view. Fabricius defcribes the larva as being of a grey brown colour, with a darker dorfal line, and curves on the fegments, and according alfo to this writer the larva feeds on the oak, whence it obtains the tnvial appellation of the great oak beauty. Three waves of dark brown acrofs each fuperior wing ; together with a fpot of orange or bright brown colour, at the bafe, and another nearly of the fame colour on the exterior margin of each, Among the feveral Moths of the Geometre divifion of Phalenz which are known to the Englith Colle&tors by the trivial diftinétion, Thorn Moths, our prefent Infect is neither the moft confpicuous, or rare; it is however a beautiful creature when taken immediately from the Pupa cafe, but rarely fine, when caught in the fly ftate, in the fowling-net; the down being of fuch an exquifite texture that the flighteft touch mutt inevitably damage its appearance. F The 26 PLATE LXXXIL The Pupa is marked with a brown colour at every annulation im- mediately after the Caterpillar has paffed to that ftate, but as the crea- ture within becomes more perfecl, that brown is gradually changed to a dark, or black colour. ‘ I have obferved much variation in the colours of different fpecimens of this fpecies; of three male Infe€&ts which I have bred this feafon, one only correfponded with the annexed figure, one inclined much more to a red brown, and the other to a dull purple. I met with the Caterpillars on the oak, and they always preferred that food to any other. The Caterpillars are fmall in July, they pafs to the Pupa ftate in Autumn, and the Moths are to be taken about the middle of March. Although, as we have juft obferved, this Infect does not particularly claim our rcgard as a rarity, it does not appear to have been defcribed by Linneus, or even by Fabricius in his Species Infetorum; and no account of it is included in Berkenhout’s Outlines, in Harris’s Cata- logue of Englifh Infects, or any other work we have had an opportu- nity of perufing. In its manners, the Caterpillar is not more fingular than in its _. aS s form; when young it is very active and in continual motion; but as it — _ grows larger it becomes more fluggith in its difpofition: it will fome- times affix itfelf by its hind feet to one of the extreme branches of the tree on which it feeds, in the fame manner as fhewn in our plate, and will remain in that pofture feveral hours without the leaft apparent figns of life. Fine lucid green, two white waves acrofs the upper, and one aerofs the under wings, This fpecies we have ever found peculiar to the woods about two or three miles beyond Dartford (Kent), particularly on the fkirts of Darnwood, and near the banks of the river ‘I hames.at Queenhithe ; it has probably never been taken elfewhere, or the name Dartford Emerald would not have been fo generally adopted by Colleétors. It is not very frequent even in thofe local fituations, nor can we learn that its larva and pupa ftate has been afcertained before; the fpe- cies has neither been defcribed by Linneus nor Fabricius; Harris does not mention it in his catalogue of Englifh Moths, nor has a figure of it been given in any preceding publication that have come under our infpection. The fpecific name is intended to exprefs the lucid or tranfparent appearance of the Infect. M J am 68 PLATE CVE. I am not certain whether in the larva ftate it feeds on the Convol- vulus, although I found it on a plant of that kind; as its climbing ftalks and tendrils were fo intricated with branches of white-tharn, oak, and broom, as to preclude any accurate determination. I kept them in a gauze cage for the fpace of a fortnight, and fup- plied them with frefli portions of the different plants every day, but could never obferye them take the leaft fubfiftence during the whole time; they affixed their tails and hinder legs in the mefhes of the gauze when I firft removed them into the cage, and never fhewed, the leaft figns of life after; as they held firmly by the gauze, in the pofitions reprefented in our plate, I was very much difappointed to find on attempting to remove them, that two were dead; May 23d I obferved that which was alive threw out a very delicate white thread, as if about to {pin a cone; the body gradually fhrivelled at the upper part, while the lower became proportionably thicker; two days after it fell to the bottom of the cage and became a pupa, at firft of a whitifh, and after of a fine green colour, marked at the narrow end with fhort black ftreaks. Except Phalena Groffulariata*, figured in the early part of this work, few fpecies are more common than this, on the fmaller kinds of fruit trees, but particularly the Goofeberry. The fmall Caterpillars are of a dark purplifh colour, when nearly full fed they have a yellow under fide marked with black, with the back purple ; before they change to the pupa ftate, they become almoft brown. PHALHENA ANASTOMOSIS. rere ae Since the publication of the laft Number, we have been favoured with a moft beautiful fpecimen of the Moth figured in the 124th Plate of this Work, and prefent a figure of it to our fubfcribers, together with the feveral changes of the Phalena Haftata; it will fhew how very liable this Infect is to variation in its colours, fize, &c. We find alfo that though this Infect has been named Phalzna Anaftomofis in the moft fcientifie Cabinets in London, and always received as fuch by the beft authority, it is not the Infe@ referred to by Fabricius in his Species InfeGtorum under that title; that Author, as well as Linnzus, refers under the fpecific. name Ph, Curtula to the 43d Plate of the third Volume of Roefel’s Infeéts 5 in this Plate is figured a Moth which is certainly a {pecies diftinét from our Infeét, and is well known by its Linnzan name Curtula, or Englith title Chocolate Tip ; yet Fabricius gives an addi- tonal reference for the fame fpecies to the r1th Plate of Roefel’s fourth ta oom sete ar bas ~*~ ’ dude oe s ‘s ‘a +% son ni * a Ge ki - ; y i f -y. i » & ae a 7 ‘ rant ; a we f, ’ ee . v le ee, , at f . 7 nf s ‘i i i ss : i : 1 p a. a ‘ : ae cs a : ey 4 : oe ta ges cm oe i : 7 uo = ve . , a | 7 n 7 r er ny ; xT Le e, : P Ui > iL a ie = * . ie | ee 7 * S uk : ~~ - i ae s EG ¥ : 1 : : ‘ ' tetas * : nh pl Pee | oe = ‘ 42040 ‘coh 7 rag 5 é te ee PLAT E CX, 87 fourth Volume of Infeéts, and in this we find the figure of a Moth whofe markings and general appearance correfpond with our fpeci- men, though its colours are totally different, being a very pale grey with fcarcely any dark colour near the apex of the wings ; the larva much more refembles our figure, and induces us to conclude, that though the figure of this laft Moth is fo extremely different, it is probably intended for the fame fpecies as our Infect ; and therefore that the two diftinct fpecies have been confounded together, by a falfe quotation of Linnzus’s Amanuentfis. And we are partly confirmed in this fuppofition by the words of Linnzus himfelf ; he fays, Ph. Anaftomofis is very like Ph. The 46 PLAY &; CCXXXIIL The trivial Englifh name, Pheenix Moth, has been given to this Infe&t from a circumftance Jittle known, and {carcely deferving | notice, except as it proves the impropriety of naming Infeéts from local circumftances, when any other can be well applied. A {malk part of a wood near London had been cut down, and a quantity of charcoal made on the fpot. This place had been often vifited by Aurelians, but the Phzelzena Prunaria had never been difcovered there, nor indeed was then known asa Britifh Infeé&t. On the following year, when the ground was cleared, and the underwood grown up, this Moth was found; it continued to be taken conftantly in the months of June and July for many years, in this place, and then totally difappeared. The late Mr. Bentley, known as a collector of Englifh Infetts, difcovered a breeding-place of this Moth on Epping Foreft, and commonly found three or four fpecimens every feafon. - We are now certain that it occurs, in abundance in various other parts of the kingdom.
